Legal Executive / Junior Solicitor

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Purpose

To provide comprehensive legal support across a range of areas including commercial law, company law, administrative law, corporate governance, Freedom of Information and Data Protection legislation.  This role will involve drafting, reviewing and advising on legal documents, supporting compliance and governance processes and liaising with internal and external stakeholders to ensure legal and regulatory obligations are met.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
General Legal / Corporate Governance:
  • Draft, proofread and format contractual and internal governance documents, ensuring compliance with internal governance frameworks and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct legal and corporate governance research and prepare briefing notes on developments.
  • Support the maintenance of legal and corporate governance files, legal databases and document management systems.
  • Assist with the preparation of board and committee documentation.
Freedom of Information (FOI):
  • Support the processing of formal requests for information in compliance with FOI legislation.
  • Liaise with internal directorates/departments to identify and retrieve relevant documents or information.
  • Support the preparation of advice to management and staff on compliance with FOI legislation and other relevant privacy and data protection laws.
  • Support the internal reporting of FOI activity, trends, and statistics to senior management.
  • Assist with responses to FOI decisions.
Data Protection:
  • Support the Data Protection Officer with ensuring compliance with the GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, and other Irish data protection laws and regulations
  • Support the developments of DPIAs for high-risk processing activities and the implementation of data protection by design and by default across all business processes, products, and services.
  • Support responses to data subject requests and the investigation, reporting and management of data protection breaches or security incidents, to enable timely notification to the Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) where required.
Sensitive Information:
  • Work closely with the Head of Legal / Data Protection Officer / Freedom of Information Officer to ensure sensitive and/or confirmed information is handled appropriately in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Any other duties appropriate to the position that may be assigned.

Relationships
Internal: 
  In addition to direct reporting relationships above the post holder is required to liaise with all personnel and Directorates in the Company

External:  The postholder is required to liaise with all appropriate external bodies, providers, suppliers, and companies.

PERSON SPECIFICATON
Education, Knowledge, Experience & Skills

Essential:
  • A recognised legal qualification e.g. Diploma in Legal Studies, LLB or equivalent
  • 2 – 3 years’ legal experience as a legal executive or junior solicitor role or in compliance or public administration functions.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of Freedom of Information legislation, Data Protection laws, contract, corporate governance and public sector transparency practices.
  • Excellent drafting, analytical and communication skills
  • Attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Desirable:
  • Experience working in or with public sector or semi-state bodies
