8.33kHz Voice Channel Conversion Programme Completion

As required by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/373, Article 3(f)(2), Ireland has completed the conversion of applicable aeronautical voice frequency assignments to 8.33 kHz voice channel assignments, including the remaining previously exempted 25 kHz frequency assignments at certain airports and aeronautical voice channel assignments used at General Aviation (GA) aerodromes.

This change completes a programme that has been implemented over several years. The initial conversion of Irish voice frequency assignments took place in 2018. The remaining assignments, previously operating under regulatory exemption, have now transitioned to 8.33 kHz voice channel assignments.

Accordingly, the national conversion programme is now complete, except for those assignments that remain subject to applicable regulatory exemptions.

Information on the implementation programme, associated exemptions, and equipage requirements has previously been published through official aeronautical information channels, including:

  • AIP Ireland (ENR 1.8 Regional Supplementary Procedures)
  • IAA Aeronautical Notice O.5
  • Relevant AIP Amendments and NOTAM publications
Pilots, aircraft operators, aerodrome operators, flying clubs, air traffic service providers, and other aviation stakeholders should ensure that:
  • The latest AIP Ireland, NOTAMs, and aerodrome information for current channel assignments are consulted prior to flight.
  • Aircraft and ground radio equipment can operate on 8.33 kHz channels where operation on such channels is required (see also IAA Aeronautical Notice O.5).
  • Flight crews are familiar with the use of 8.33 kHz channel spacing and the correct selection of published voice channel assignments.
 
Please note that certain frequency assignments may remain subject to the exemptions provided under Article 3(f)(2)(a) and 3(f)(2)(b) of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2017/373 and therefore remain outside the scope of conversion to 8.33 kHz channel spacing.

  • Check the current AIP Ireland, NOTAMs, and aerodrome information for published channel assignments.
  • Verify that installed radio equipment is suitable for operation on the assigned channels for the intended flight.
